Reichsrat von Buhl
Estate Overview & Philosophy
Reichsrat von Buhl is a 60.4-hectare VDP estate in Deidesheim, its 72% Riesling planting anchored in the great sites of Forst, Deidesheim and Ruppertsberg.
Current VDP records name the Hüftlein-Seeger family as owner, with Monika Schmid and Simone Frigerio serving as managing directors and Frigerio also holding the cellarmaster post. Earlier published details—naming a different winemaker and owner—were out of date.

Why this estate matters
Founded in 1849, Reichsrat von Buhl holds one of the Mittelhaardt’s most concentrated portfolios of top vineyard sites. That makes it a natural benchmark against its Deidesheim neighbors.
The estate also produces Sekt, so the name on the label doesn’t guarantee still Riesling—check the bottle.
This profile now reflects current VDP leadership and vineyard data, replacing outdated references to Matthieu Kauffmann and the Niederberger family.
Vineyards and origin
Forster Kirchenstück, Jesuitengarten, Pechstein, Ungeheuer and Freundstück form the core of the estate’s Grosse Lage holdings. Deidesheimer Kalkofen and Kieselberg, along with Ruppertsberger Reiterpfad, round out the portfolio, supported by several Erste Lage parcels.
A vineyard name signals origin—not a guaranteed aroma profile or score. Geology, aspect and elevation shape how the vine grows, but vintage, harvest timing, fermentation, élevage and bottle age all leave their mark too.
Before crediting any flavor difference to soil alone, compare wines from the same vintage and style.
Wine range and farming
Dry Riesling and Grosses Gewächs sit at the heart of the range, alongside Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, other varieties and Sekt. A Forst vineyard name on a label doesn’t automatically mean Riesling—confirm the grape and exact VDP tier before buying.
Earlier claims of certified-organic farming and specific cellar practices weren’t backed by current sources and have been removed from the sidebar. Consult the estate’s own certification pages and wine-specific technical sheets for accurate detail.
How to buy and compare
Start with a village-level Deidesheim or Forst Riesling. From there, compare Ungeheuer against Pechstein, or set two Deidesheim sites side by side within the same vintage.
Judge Sekt on its own terms—grape, method and lees contact—rather than mapping it onto the still-wine hierarchy.
- Start with style. Match Trocken/GG, Feinherb or a specific Prädikat before comparing two origins.
- Read the whole label. Producer, vintage, village or vineyard, sweetness cue and AP number identify a wine more reliably than any shelf tag.
- Use current technical data. Alcohol, residual sugar, vessel and release date shift from bottling to bottling and vintage to vintage.
- For mature wine, verify provenance. Storage, fill level, closure and seller reputation matter far more than a generic regional aging chart.
Classification and label context
The VDP hierarchy rises from Gutswein through Ortswein and Erste Lage to Grosse Lage. Grosse Lage classifies the site itself; Grosses Gewächs, or GG, denotes a dry wine drawn from that site. Fruit-sweet wines from the same vineyards instead carry Prädikat designations—Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese and beyond. See our Grosse Lage vs GG guide.
