Kalkofen
Vineyard Terroir & Geology
Deidesheimer Kalkofen is a small VDP.GROSSE LAGE Riesling vineyard set into the warm foothill belt of the Mittelhaardt, its limestone, loess loam and marly clay soils yielding Riesling of singular density and grip.
The name is literal, not romantic: a lime kiln operated here in the fifteenth century, burning local limestone for mortar. The Bavarian vineyard assessment of 1828 already ranked the site among the region’s finest, well before the VDP existed to confirm it.

A warm, gently sloping site
Kalkofen occupies a lightly elevated plateau in the Haardt foothills. Its gradient, a modest 2–10%, is nothing like the vertiginous Mosel slopes further north.
Elevation still does useful work here, encouraging airflow through the canopy, while a sandstone wall along the northern edge blocks cooler winds and banks daytime heat.
Worth noting: the VDP’s own page carries inconsistent elevation figures between its prose and its data table. Rather than manufacture false precision, this guide reports the broader range.
Limestone with loess and marl
Limestone dominates the geological story, but the VDP also documents loess loam, marly clay, sand and occasional limestone rubble threaded through the site.
This composite soil holds moisture moderately well, an asset in the warm, comparatively dry Mittelhaardt, where vines need a buffer against summer stress.
Drainage, water supply and warmth shape vine growth and ripening. They do not, on their own, produce a literal chalk flavour in the glass, whatever tasters mean when they reach for words like chalky, stony or mineral.
History and producers
The fifteenth-century lime kiln gave the vineyard its name. By 1828, Bavarian classifiers had already marked Kalkofen as an outstanding site, decades before modern German wine law existed.
Today the VDP lists Von Winning, Bassermann-Jordan, Reichsrat von Buhl, Dr. Bürklin-Wolf and Georg Mosbacher as growers here. Most flagship bottlings are dry Riesling, released as Grosses Gewächs.
How to compare Kalkofen
Taste it against Hohenmorgen from the same producer to isolate soil and site differences under one winemaking hand.
Or set it beside Forster Ungeheuer, keeping the region constant while soil mix, scale and exposure all shift.
