Estate Overview & Philosophy

Weingut Haart is an 8.8-hectare, Riesling-only VDP estate in Piesport, holding the tiny Kreuzwingert monopole alongside important parcels in Piesporter Goldtröpfchen and Domherr.

The live record previously used the outdated title “Weingut Reinhold Haart” and named Theo Haart. The current VDP listing uses “Haart” and names Johannes and Marcus Haart as owners, with Johannes Haart as cellarmaster.

Estate history and identity

The Haart family traces vineyard ownership in Piesport back to 1337, and was among the first Mosel families to bottle its own wine rather than sell exclusively by cask to négociants.

The estate’s current identity is simply Haart. The page title and structured data fields have been corrected to remove an obsolete proprietor name.

The estate states its goal as natural, unadorned, long-lived Riesling. That is a stated philosophy, not a certification. It should not be read as a claim about specific sulfur levels, filtration practice, or the handling of every individual fermentation.

Vineyards and origin

Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, Domherr and Grafenberg stand as the estate’s major Grosse Lage references. Kreuzwingert is the outlier: an unusually small monopole the VDP records at just 0.098 hectare, arguably Germany’s smallest legally recognized single vineyard. Wintricher Ohligsberg also appears in the current site list.

Vineyard names are declarations of origin, not guarantees of flavor. Aspect, elevation, water supply and the underlying Devonian slate shape growing conditions — but vintage, picking decisions, fermentation choices, residual sugar and bottle age all shape the wine just as much.

Treat site descriptions as a framework for comparison. Slate does not pass directly into the glass as a flavor.

Wine range and cellar approach

The estate works across dry and Prädikat styles. Johannes Haart points to Goldtröpfchen Kabinett as an entry point, while Kreuzwingert remains a scarce, site-specific bottling. The distinction between them is one of origin and scale — not a simple hierarchy of quality.

The VDP interview supports a nature-oriented, minimally interventionist philosophy, but does not confirm the previous directory’s specific claims of “neutral vessels” and “extended lees aging.” Those unverified technical details have been removed.

How to buy Weingut Haart

Start with Goldtröpfchen Kabinett or a Piesport village wine. Approach Kreuzwingert as a rare origin worth understanding — not a guaranteed investment. For comparisons, match vintage, style and AP number exactly.

  1. Choose sweetness first. Look for trocken, feinherb, a Prädikat designation, or the producer’s technical sheet; a vineyard name alone reveals nothing about residual sugar.
  2. Then choose origin. Regional, village and single-vineyard wines answer different questions. They are not interchangeable price tiers.
  3. Check the exact vintage and AP number. These identify the harvest and approved bottling. Never transfer a review from one wine to another with a similar label.
  4. For older bottles, buy provenance. Storage, fill level, closure condition and seller reputation matter more than any generic aging promise.

VDP and label context

As a VDP member, the estate may use the association’s four-tier origin system: Gutswein, Ortswein, Erste Lage and Grosse Lage. Grosse Lage names the highest classified site; Grosses Gewächs, or GG, denotes the dry wine from that site. Fruit-sweet wines from a Grosse Lage instead use Prädikat terms such as Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese. Our German Riesling label guide explains the wider system.
