Schloss Vollrads
Estate Overview & Philosophy
Schloss Vollrads is a roughly 70-hectare, Riesling-only Rheingau estate in Oestrich-Winkel, its wine trade documented as early as 1211, with vineyards falling south toward the Rhine.
Claims that the estate was “founded in 1090” do not hold up against the record. The defensible milestone is that 1211 wine-sale document — so we’ve dropped the unsupported founding date in favor of what the evidence actually shows.

Why this estate matters
Schloss Vollrads runs a full Riesling ladder — from estate-level bottlings through named-site wines to mature releases — all produced under one historic roof. The house favors selective hand-picking across vineyards that fall southward toward the river.
An earlier claim of “organic since 2005” isn’t backed by the estate’s current official materials. We’ve replaced it with their actual stated position: the property works under ecological guidelines.
Vineyards and origin
The estate’s holdings encircle the property itself, anchored by the Schloss Vollrads monopole and the Schlossberg parcel, the latter used in its Volratz Riesling. Keep the winery name, the legal site designation, and the individual product name distinct — conflating them muddies what you’re actually buying.
A vineyard name signals origin — not a guaranteed flavor profile or score. Geology, aspect, and elevation shape how the vine grows, but vintage, harvest timing, fermentation choices, élevage, and bottle age all leave their mark on the finished wine. Compare sites within the same vintage and style before crediting any difference to soil alone.
Wine range and farming
Everything here is Riesling, but the finished wines span multiple styles: trocken, off-dry, Prädikat, and sparkling bottlings all appear in the range. Producer, vintage, precise origin, and sweetness language each carry weight when choosing a bottle.
The official estate site states that Schloss Vollrads farms under ecological guidelines and hand-harvests in multiple selective passes. Don’t mistake that for a certified-organic date — none is named by a current certifying body.
How to buy and compare
Start with an estate Riesling, then move to a Schloss Vollrads site wine or a mature release. Historic prestige and old vintages don’t erase provenance risk — verify storage conditions and fill level before committing to mature purchases.
- Start with style. Match Trocken/GG, Feinherb, or a specific Prädikat before comparing two origins against each other.
- Read the whole label. Producer, vintage, village or vineyard, sweetness cue, and AP number identify a wine far more reliably than a shelf tag.
- Use current technical data. Alcohol, residual sugar, vessel, and release date shift by bottling and vintage — don’t assume consistency.
- For mature wine, verify provenance. Storage, fill level, closure integrity, and seller reputation matter more than any generic regional aging chart.
Classification and label context
The VDP hierarchy climbs from Gutswein through Ortswein and Erste Lage to Grosse Lage. Grosse Lage classifies the site itself; Grosses Gewächs (GG) denotes a dry wine grown there. Fruit-sweet wines from Grosse Lage vineyards instead carry Prädikat terms — Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, and beyond. See our Grosse Lage vs GG guide.
